FELIX DRAESEKE / transcribed WOLFGANG MÜLLER-STEINBACH Süße Melancholie, from the Ghaselenkranz for Piano, Fata Morgana, Op. 13, No.8 for Two Violins, Viola, Violotta and Violoncello

Wolfgang Müller-SteinbachThroughout his life Wolfgang Müller-Steinbach (born 1945) has been an admirer and devotee of the art of Felix Draeseke. Himself an established composer, Müller-Steinbach exhibits an astonishingly sensitive understanding for the style of the older master. This is confirmed in his transcription of a piano piece by Draeseke for Stelzner instruments, and in it Müller-Steinbach demonstrates his insight into the singular contrapuntal associations between the chordal formations which are the basis of Draeseke's piano writing and a major characteristic of his unique art. (Müller-Steinbach's performance of Süße Melancholie can be heard on AK/Coburg CD, DR 0005). This writer was told in conversation with Wolfgang Müller-Steinbach that the transcription is intended primarily as a thank-you gift for cellist Barbara Thiem (who has recorded the complete works for cello and piano by Felix Draeseke with Müller-Steinbach on AK/Coburg CD, DR 0002) and the Summit Chamber Players. It was composed in the summer of 2004 and, according to Müller-Steinbach, is meant as an encore piece and, as such, was given its successful premiere at a concert of the Summit Chamber Players at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in April, 2005. Müller-Steinbach also called this writer’s attention to the fact that it was his intention to treat the violotta in a soloistic manner without letting it overwhelm the ensemble. The makeup of the performing group is intentionally the same as in Draeseke's masterful quintet. It is also not to be overlooked that in this transcription of Draeseke's Süße Melancholie by Wolfgang Müller-Steinbach we have the first piece in the 21st century written for Stelzner instruments!

Wolfgang Müller-Steinbach is professor of keyboard and composition at the Hochschule für Musik, Mannheim, Germany and a much sought after vocal accompanist and chamber music partner.
